Burrell Jones

Burrell Jones was born July 29, 1803, a son of Captain James Jones, Frontier Indian fighter of Camden, Wayne, Charlton, Glynn, Ware and Pierce Counties . Burrell died June 21, 1877, and was buried at New Hope primitive Baptist Church Cemetery on the Buffalo creek at Hickox, Ga. This is the church which his father who had become an ordained ministered help constitute in 1845.

Burrell Jones was married Feb. 29, 1829 to Mary Margaret (Peggy) Mizell, daughter of Jesse (James) Mizell, Revolutionary Soldier, born 1765 in Halifax County , now Martin , South Carolina . He served with General jasper at Savannah and crossed the Pee Dee river with General Francis Marion. Jesse Mizell married Mary (Polly) Stallings and they came to Georgia settling first in Bullock and Montgomery Counties, then in 1821, bought 490 acres of land from Allen Parrish in Camden County on Spanish Creek in present Charlton County and moved there where he became a preacher in old Sardis Primitive Baptist Church which was constituted in 1817, five miles north of old Traders Hill, formerly Fort Alert, a post lookout for Indians in frontier days. Jesse Mizell died in 1827. His Last Will and Testament was proved by James “Scott, MIC. Mrs. Mary Mizell, widow, qualified as Executrix Jan. 2, 1837, Camden Co., Ga.

Mary Margaret Mizell as born August 2, 1809 in Montgomery Co., Ga., and died in 1886; buried at New Hope Cemetery .

Burrell Jones and Mary Margaret Mizell Jones had a farm about fifteen miles from Lulaton and Waynesville. The couple had eleven children:

(1) Jesse, born 1829, moved to Stark Fl.

(2) Harley, born 1831, married Dorinda (Dora) Knox. Harley was Lieutenant in the Civil War, took fever and died, buried in Gordonville, Va. He had five children: Mary Jane, 1852; Owen K., 1854; Elizabeth, 1855; Benjamin F., 1859; and Beauregard, 1862. The widow of Harley married Moses S. Highsmith, son of David and Annis (Moses S. was brother of Daniel Highsmith). Mose and Dora had children: Catherine, 1866; Eulalia, 1868; Eugenia, 1872; and Michael, 1876.

(3) Joseph, born 1832, married Elizabeth Braddock, lived in Chattanooga , Tn.

(4) Sarah, born 1833, died young.

(5) Benjamin Perry, born 1837, married Elizabeth Knight, daughter of Jonathan and Frances. He lived in Valdosta and was a banker. Benjamin P. Jones founded the Valdosta Bank and Trust Co.

(6) Mary Margaret, born 1839, named for her mother; married twice: a. Daniel Highsmith, born 1831, killed in Civil War Battle of Winchester, Va; wounded Sept. 19, 1864; leg and thigh amputated; died a month later, Oct. 20, 1864. Buried in Winchester Va. Daniel and Mary Margaret had five children: Burrell, Noah T., Martha L., James, Daniel Webster (Webb).

(7) James Burrell, born 1843, married four times: Mary Matilda Highsmith, daughter of Allen; Martha L. Sweat; Mattie A. Booth, Eliza J. Knight.

(8) Nancy , born 1846, married John F. Highsmith.

(9) Harriet E., born 1849. They lived in Jacksonville .

(10) Jasper, born 1851, married Mamie Moncrief. They lived in Jacksonville , Fl.

(11) Newton J., born 1853, married Bonita Richards; lived in Starke, Fl.
